Sheri Johnson Psychotherapist MSW LICSW

Minnesota

I work with men and women ages 30+ located in Minnesota who are high performers, perfectionists, overthinkers, and people-pleasers. I can help you learn how to feel more at peace, set healthier boundaries, and find more contentment living your life.

why therapy?

Maybe it was a story you told about your childhood and the room went silent. Maybe it was an argument between you and your partner and you thought “I can’t keep doing this.” Maybe someone in your life said “You should really get yourself some therapy.”

Maybe you just feel alone.

Whatever the reason, if you’re located in Minnesota and ready to heal, I’m ready to help you get started.

about me

My name is Sheri Johnson. I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) serving people located in Minnesota (MN license #25707).

Counselor, therapist, psychotherapist - in the realm of behavioral health or mental health, these terms are fairly interchangeable.

I earned an undergraduate degree in Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Superior in 1990, and worked as a mental health technician on a locked inpatient psychiatric unit for over a decade, caring for people during acute mental health crisis. I loved that work, but I wanted to learn more about helping people heal themselves.

Age at completion of Master's degree: 44. Years of therapy experience: 8. Years of life experience: 53.

My favorite part of therapy work is helping individuals understand themselves. One of my talents is asking the hard questions that others are afraid to ask.

What are therapy sessions like?

It depends. Therapy is highly personal and individualized. If you know what you want to talk about, we start there. If you don’t know where to start or feel shy, I ask questions about your life and your relationships and we usually stumble onto something interesting to talk about. I will also ask you to identify what you want to accomplish in counseling. It sometimes feels awkward for both of us at the beginning, but it will get better! When we get to know one another, a session starts with a check-in about anything new and then moves into the work you want to do. This is sometimes where the crying happens, but my goal is always to have you feeling better by the end of the session. It is not unusual to start and end a session with laughter and silliness, even though there will probably be some tough stuff in between. Therapy sessions develop their own sort of rhythm, and we will discover together what works best for you.

The perfect therapy relationship has a beginning, a middle, and an end. In my experience, 55 minute counseling sessions every other week seems to be the most effective way to begin. We might decide to meet more often in the beginning, and less often later as you develop the ability to process and make meaning of your life experiences on your own,

I do a lot of things to keep myself healthy, including spending time with family and pets, reading books, writing fiction, and enticing birds to my bird feeders. I have a fascination with birds, especially crows, and I see eagles nearly every day. The three crows in my logo showed up during a guided spirit walk (I was a bit of a skeptic) and told me their names are Joy, Comfort, and Sorrow.
